Memorias de Mi Tierra

A digital illustration for a gallery exhibition featuring local artists of Hispanic-Latino heritage who carry with them the memories and fantasies of their heritage and birth countries as they navigate their lives in the United States. These illustrations were printed as a triptych on 8 X 10 frame size.

Statement
When creating this set of illustrations, I wanted to reflect the layering of different memories, different times, different lands that arise in multi-generational immigrant families. We have never truly lived in the others country or land —separated by both time and place. With each succeeding generation this link back to Mexico weakens, as our family assimilates into the United States. We often diverging viewpoints on cultural and social issues. It feels as if none of us are facing the same direction. While I may never share my mothers memories of Mexico, and the culture she was raised in, it is still an important part of my identity. I proudly consider myself Mexican-American. Because, ultimately, we are the same family, sharing and mixing past and present memories together to create our own slice of America.
