APPRENTICING TRADITIONAL JAPANESE CERAMICS UNDER A MASTER POTTER

Before moving to Atlanta to become a designer at Calendly, I lived in the Japanese countryside as an apprentice potter. I apprenticed under Michio Kobayashi, a third-generation master potter, at his studio in Kasama, Ibaraki. Kasama is the location of one of the seven ancient kilns of Japan.

There are a lot of parallels between the design and ceramics. In many ways, I view ceramics as the original product design. Learning this craft has honed my ability to focus on details big and small, persevere through challenges, and understanding of form and function.
